One Year

It’s crazy how time flies by, how in the blink of an eye, it’s already fall. School and work is in full swing for many of us, the leaves are slowly changing colour, transforming into all sorts of vibrant colours that many of us marvel at, watching them whirl around us as we walk along, providing a sense of warmth from the chilly wind. Thanksgiving has come and gone and Halloween is soon upon us.

The past week or so has been full of ups and downs, but every day, I am so grateful to be alive, to experience everything I do each and every day and today most of all, to have met someone so wonderful and special that I have been together with for exactly one year today, my boyfriend Sean.

We met last year during my postgrad at Sheridan College, as roommates of all things! I’d just moved into a house in Oakville for the year which I shared with four other people, including Sean. It’s a small world and we learned that we had a lot in common, such as the fact that we were both from Hamilton! Having just finished my time as a blogger at the I Heart Hamilton Tour, it was neat to meet another Hamiltonian and talk about all things Hamilton. We bonded over Buffy the Vampire Slayer (seriously AWESOME show and it’d been ages since I’d met a fan of Buffy) and over the next few weeks, things started to unfold that eventually led us to decide to give it a shot.

For the most part, I am a believer in certain things happening for a reason and when you least expect them to. I never depend on these notions though to be the end all, only considering them as I think of how certain things in my life have unfolded, but always keeping in mind that I ultimately am in control. With Sean though, things happened at the right time, we both took a crazy chance and I couldn’t be happier.

It’s amazing to find someone who can listen incessantly to you as you talk a million miles a minute (trust me, there have been moments where he’s looked at me dumbfounded like “what on earth?!”), be your rock and a giver of big, comforting hugs when times are tough, know how to cheer you up with a goofy smile and jokes, appreciate the differences that there may be, respect who you are as a person and your choices, someone who can help you with all things art and design related and I in return lending my editing and writing abilities, and most of all, someone you can do the every day sort of things, but with a twist: going for walks with no destination in mind, creating our own concoctions when cooking together and TV marathons and movie nights with our own commentary, even just sitting and being. And of course, many many more things, many more to list.

It’s been a whirlwind of a year, as The Doctor (as in Doctor Who) would say, full of all sorts of “wibbly wobbly timey wimey spacey moments” and I smile as I think of everything that has happened. One year, 52 weeks, 365 days. When you break it down, you realize just how much time there is, yet how ever so quickly, it can pass you by. I’ve tried to soak up each and every moment and look forward to many more with Sean.

To Sean, my dear companion, I love you LOTS!! 🙂

xoxo Avishka
